Bill,
David J. Littleboy - Tokyo, Japan gave a very good response as
is his usual. Unlike him, I am & always will be just a long time
amateur photography enthusiast (now a digital obsessive for 5+ years).
My choice to upgrade was easier than yours because I was
moving from the 300D (Original Digital Rebel) to the 30D. Yes I still
have & use the 300D but for me here are the reasons I upgraded:
1> Spot metering.
2> Selectable *no* LCD image rotation, larger LCD is a + too.
3> RAW+JPEG options.
4> Improved shutter (longer life cycle).
5> Far more user customizable options.
6> Faster & better focus performance.
7> Lower noise & 1/3 ISO increment selections+ ISO-3200.
8> An additional 2MP (a bit more room for cropping).
9> Faster & selectable 5 & 3 fps.
10> Faster overall camera performance, including CF write
speed.
In your case, you have 1 more thing to consider;
The ability to use the EF-S lenses like the 10-22mm as David
J. Littleboy mentioned. The wide end is not where I take most of my
pictures so this lens is not worth it to *me*, but it's nice to know
that it's an options if my needs change. For now the humble 17-85mm
takes me wide enough but be advised, IS can be both effective &
addictive even on this lens.
IMHO, like most anything else in life the choice always seems
to come down to 3 considerations:
1> What do I need?
2> What do I want?
3> What can I afford?
It's your call, but thus far I am very pleased with the 30D
but than again my *needs / standards / skills* are not as high as many
other's.
Best wishes in whatever *you* decide is best for *you*.
Respectfully, DHB
