Hi Mark,
Your response is most encouraging... especially the bit about the
images being 'truly amazing'. I hadn't really considered the 5D as a
contender for my upgrade... You've made me re-think...
By "truly amazing" I'm refrring to detail.
If you do lean toward buying the 5D, you would be wise to assume the
additional purchase of top level lenses (L lenses). Otherwise, the
capability of the sensor will be severely compromised, save for with a few
stellar non-L performers, like the 100mm 2.8 macro, and the 50 1.4 USM. The
sensor really does show flaws in lesser lenses.
Are there any particular problems associated with this camera that
I need to worry about? Because I've never considered a full frame
camera, I haven't followed the feedback trail for the 5D.
If you are not accustomed to full frame film, you might want to see if you
can borrow one. People who are not used to full frame can be frustrated
with it at first because it reveals poor technique far more readily than
cropped sensor. Flash use is tricky (by comparison) since your flash now
needs to cover a wider area--where with smaller sensors, it's easier to
cover without dark corners. You also have to be much more deliberate in
extablishing depth of field.
Many thanks to all of you guys for your responses... much
appreciated.
Rob.
I've only had the 5D for about a month now, but I am used to full frame
film.
Many have forgotten the challenges of film...like vignetting, which seems to
almost magically disappear as an issue with smaller sensors. -Funny thing
is, there's nothing magical at all going on, of course... -It's just that
the smaller sensors lop off that outer part of (what would have been, on a
ff) the image.

I've frightened myself by reading about vignetting when using full
frame sensors. Quite a few lens tests I've seen show that even 'L'
glass can be problematic in this area... At least I'll be able to
use the lens's 'sweet spot' with a 1.6 crop sensor.
Rob...
There is some when shooting very wide angle at large apertures, but
for landscapes, it would be unusual to shoot these wide open anyway.
As someone who was also concerned, I can tell you that the images
I'm getting from my 5D are truly amazing. I haven't yet had the
chance to do anything very serious yet, as my schedule has been
unbelievably horrible, but when you view shots at 100%, the detail
is stunning. Portraits are incredible, with very nic eskin
renditions and detail down to individual "peach fuzz" hairs. :)
The 5D is not for everyone, but that's as it should be. Rarely are
cameras of this calibre the best for the casual shooter. If you are
a serious shooter, and deliberate in your technique...the 5D's
imaging capability is really something.

Im sure its a good camera but why not buy something that will be an
improvement you will notice like a 5d
