Re: What's the Olympus C-725 like ?

I'm thinking of buying a second camera and am considering a
used Oly C-725 that I found cheap online. What first got my
attention was that this camera with 8x zoom is being offered
for about a third of the price of my FZ20. I don't mind the
low pixel count, the rather small 1.5" LCD or the somewhat
large size, but would like to have reasonable performance.
I can't find an in-depth review and this is what I gathered
from reviews by a few buyers, mostly inexperienced users -

Short battery life (can't find CIPA rating)
Poor performance in low light
Picture blurry at long zoom (due to lack of IS ?)
Very powerful flash - too powerful by some accounts
Picture quality good to very good
Can't find anything specific about shutter lag.

One conflicting report by an owner who claims to be an
experienced photographer says that picture quality is "awful"
and that battery is "very good", enough for a whole day's
shooting.

There seems to be a lot of negative things said about this
camera. Can anyone please confirm or refute this impression ?
Did Oly produce a lemon with this model ?

It is, indeed, a lemon. All of the above is generally true. Some
things are random, so you may take a brilliant picture one minute and
a crap one next. Firstly, focus is totally auto and not good, often
resulting in soft images. The thing about the flash is absolutely spot
on. There are adjustments but you just get fed up going through it all
the time. From what I gather the lens is plastic
but i can tell you that when you get fringing you will sometimes see
so much purple that it is hard to remove in the usual ways, removing
it will leave obvious colourless areas. The battery use doesn't seem
too bad TBH but there are some nasty little surprises, such as
removing the batteries without making sure everything is switched off
completely can result in total reset, including clock, but worse still
there is a fault which can cause a slight knock to reset everything,
again including the clock. This once happened to me when i was setting
it up on a monopod. Put the cam on the pod, switched it on, then
realised I needed a bit more height so I dropped the bottom section of
the pod, causing a slight click which was enough to cause the cam to
reset!

It has a nasty habit in auto of selecting 200 ISO or above, which are
all pretty useless on this cam.

the thing about soft images at long zoom is right and the there are
many many other issues around this sort of thing.

I really would advise against buying this camera even at a bargain
price.
