You have some good advice on extension tubes, but I should point out
that the term "extension tube" is often misused. An extension tube has no
optical parts and only serves to hold the lens further away form the camera.
In doing so you may loose some or all automatic control of the lens.

Some people confuse extension tubes with telle-extenders. They are a
different type of beast and they do have optical components and serve to
stretch out the image that the lens produces to make it appear to be a
longer focal length. (1.5X 2X or 3X) They reduce the effective aperture and
usually show up where the extender or lens has optical weaknesses.
