I am looking for a digital SLR and I am narrowing my list down. My
short
list is the Canon Rebel XT and the Nikon D70. I basically know the
features listed for each but I am looking for opinions on which is the
better overall camera. Wear, body construction, picture quality etc.
I
currently own the Canon S50 5MP and am very happy with it but want to
play
more and add lenses as time goes on. Your opinions would be
appreciated.

The body construction is probably a little better on the D70, and the
picture quality is similar enough not to worry about. The small size of
the
RebXT is a put-off to some, a bonus to others.

The real question is this: Which system do you want to buy into,
Canon
or Nikon? Unless you have reason to prefer one over the other, both
cameras
are good enough that all you have to do is pick both of them up, and
choose
the one that feels best to you.

Steve,
I agree wholeheartedly with your comments.
There is also something we all tend to pass by: the camera is but a tool.
Not so long ago, in a thread in this or other photo NG, someone was
showing
his album of photos taken with a simple Kodak. Everyone raved with the
exceptional quality of his photos and yet, he was a beginner. A good
camera
is a requirement indeed, but the person behind it does make a difference.
All of this to say that when I chose the Canon Rebel XT (body only), it
was
the camera I was comfortable with at the time (price wise, accessories and
handling). I also had a Canon flash. Had I chosen a Canon 20D or Nikon
D70,
I doubt that my results would have been much different. These cameras
deliver good results. The differnce is ME ;-)
Best regards,
Marcel

I agree too, my hands are slightly smaller than a friends and I get on
better with my 350D then with his 20D and visa versa. I also personally
prefer the lightness of the 350D with the 50mm f/1.8 when out for general or
portrait shots. Had limited play with D70 in shop and can't really notice
any significant advantages of one over the other picture quality wise.
