I was the top bidder 4 separate times on Nikon lenses. Each time someone
outbid me at the last second by 2 dollars. Obviously they have either paid
someone to bid for them who has a computer program to do this or they have
such a program themselves. There is no way that a legitimate bidder could
come in at the last possible second and win without such a program. My
point is that ebay must know that this is going on and so the whole auction
is dishonest and rigged. I think that ebay could weed out programed bids
if they really wanted to. I will no longer attempt to bid on anything on
ebay.
You just don't understand how eBay's bidding system works.
What is actually happening to you is merely that people who
do understand how it works are outsmarting you. Instead of
placing a bid based on your current high bid, and intended only
to be higher than that current high bid, they simply watch the
clock, and at 10-15 seconds before the listing closes they bid
the highest price they are willing to pay for the item. They
either have the high bid, or they don't, but you don't have a
chance to decide you'll try to bid higher than they did.
The point in placing bids that way is to prevent fools from
engaging in a "bidding war" based only on what the current bid
is! There is no time left.
Generally (but not always) placing a bid earlier than the last
15 seconds has no effect other than raising the eventual price
paid for an item. Of course eBay and sellers love to see that
happen, so they like to wish you "good luck" and speak of
"winning" a bid! And indeed there are a lot of suckers who get
excited...
It isn't luck and you don't win anything.
