I don't have to be at the computer to snipe. And bidding early in the
auction just allows others to nibble away at my proxy. Why would I want
to allow that?
And, so you think you're the *last* sniper? I've tried that, and it
seldom works. Most snipers I know have discovered that a snipe must
still be high enough to outbid other snipers; self-defeating.
I'm pretty sure that virtually all snipers know they have to beat all
the other bidders, including other snipers. You've overlooked the fact
that not all auctions attract more than one sniper. If I'm the only
one, I have the advantage over those lemmings who rely on others to
tell them how much something is worth. You don't.
