Foveon has no spatial issues with color as does Bayer, but If I'm not
mistaken, Foveon still uses color filters.
I did hear that not, and I've also often heard the sigma dSLR haven't
any AA filter at all. Backing that, the aformentioned article says "The
principle of operation for that image sensor [foveon] and the new one
is the same. Both make use of the different penetration depths of
wavelengths of incoming light to assign each photon at a pixel to red,
green or blue without the need for a filter."
The difference between foveon and the new sensor is in the
semi-conductor structure of the sensor (a domain in which I don't know
anything).
Btw, I also did hear the vertical-stacking filter of a foveon wasn't as
accurate in color separation as the pigments of the bayer filter,
leading to weaknesses in color rendition (esp. skin tones)... We still
don't live in a perfect world, and it seems that Foveon has different
color issues than Bayer sensors.
My 2c's :
- about Bayer, I'd think that as the Bayer mask has more or less the
same weakness as human vision (color resolution inferior to luminance
resolution), that weakness becomes acceptable.
- about sensors, I'd think that resolution is no more an issue these
days, and that future progresses may be directed toward less noise ie
greater sensibilities, and greater dynamic range?
