Reduced competition is never the path or more innovation. It is also
a mistake to assume that the main players today will continue their
dominance in the future. Likewise it is a mistake to assume no new
companies can come in to the market and become a major player in the
DSLR field.

I'm sure Nikon and Canon will fight like hell to retain
and expand their market share. Both are heavily
diversified companies, so neither company lives or
dies by their DSLR line.

It might be worth distinguishing between two categories
of DSLR: those with interchangeable lenses (Nikon,
Canon, et. al.) and those with fixed zooms (eg., Lumix.)

Yes. We distinguish them by referring to the ones with a mirror and an optical viewfinder and interchangeable lenses and large sensors as "DSLRs". We refer to the fixed zoom Lumix types as "point-and-shoots that kind of look like SLRs," or "PASTKOLLSLRs."
