Sorry Rafe - looking back, it seemed as though I was implying that you
had an obsession. Not what I meant, at all - I should be a bit more
careful about how I phrase things.

You're right that it would be nice if they told us what to do. But
given that there will always be a certain number of people who screw
things up, I can see their logic in not doing do.

In scuba, repairing a reg is fairly easy as well - yet manufacturers
make a big deal out of always getting them inspected annually at an
authorized outlet, etc. etc, for the simply reason that the cost of a
screw-up is very high.

In photography, admittedly, no one drowns if they inadvertently scratch
their sensor (except in a pool of their own tears), but it does pose a
serious time, resource and cash cost on the manufacturer to fix.

There are enough 3rd-party solutions out there now anyway, that it
doesnt really matter if the manufacturer gives advice or no.
