(http://www.pcinspector.de/download.asp?language=1#file_recovery) was
able to recover about 2/3 of the photos. It's free. It claimed to
recover all of them but several files were corrupted and when opened in
Photoshop only had part of the image. I tried 4 different programs and
they all gave the exact same results.
When you edit in-camera, and take more pictures, you begin to fragment
the FAT, and automatic recovery programs can't deal with this. With a
fair amount of manual labour you can recover more files, but this needs
special "forensic" software and a level of training that you probably
are unwilling to undergo.
Pure nonsense. All data cards use the standard DOS format which is well
understood by most automated softwared. I have had PhotoRescue recover
pictures from a data card that were more than a year old without my
even looking for them. I had taken many thousands of pictures in the
interim and used the card on several different cameras, often
reformatting using both 'quick' non-destructive formats and complete
formats. I had even used the card for other applications, such as file
transfer between computers and picture editing. Yet PhotoRescue was
able to recover these ancient photos without any intervention on my
part whatsoever. I had no idea that they were even still there.
The fact that it is possible to format a card to the point where it is
unrecoverable has no bearing whatsoever. You could smash it with a
hammer, too. But ordinary photo editing is not going to destroy the
information on the card. Neither is a fragmented FAT. And PhotoRescue
requires no training at all; not even the 'expert' version. PhotoRescue
was even used to successfully recover photos from cards that were
burned and crushed at the World Trade Center, no doubt all automated.
Yes, it will also recover some partial photos. There comes a point
where information is irrecoverably lost. PhotoRescue has never
recovered photos much more than a year old despite the card being more
than two years old. But it is certainly capable of far more than what
you seem to think an automated data recovery program should be able to
do.
