Hi

Having recently moved into the digital world, I was wondering what you
guys do about copyright. In the film world, you can hold onto the
negatives and thus secure your rights as a photographer.

With digital, this is not an option. So, what do you do?

a) imprint the clients copy of the images with a watermark
b) just give the client a hardcopy as you would do with film
c) give the client the image with a written statement of copyright

or what?

Am I right in thinking that embedding copyright info within the image is
not really practical as some tools can remove this?

cheers

The tools you'd use depend on the nature of the licensing agreement.
Either you've worked it out with your client which of you owns the
materials, or you're not a very good businessman.

If I were to shoot, say, a wedding, then *I* really don't have a use for
the originals (read: RAW files), other than to try to extort some more
money from the newlyweds at some other date. We could put it in the
contract that shots I shoot of the wedding are owned by whoever's paying
the bill, or I could retain ownership and license the party the use of
the pictures they paid for. Either way, it's *clear,* and that kind of
clarity makes for good business.

Licensing isn't something you determine while handing the client a CD.

If your any kind of business, you should have contracts that have
everything stated. If your not having contracts your only looking for
trouble. However there are people out there that will try to copy regardless
of a contract .
