Re: Need help from digital backup experts - UDF & SP2

Today Pat commented courteously on the subject at hand

This is too hard for a Sunday morning.

I don't have a clue, but I have a few questions that might
help other readers.

Does a CD burned on you old machine kill your new machine
if put into either drive, or is it only 1 drive. If only
1, which one.

Yes, all CD-R, old or new, and all new DVD-Rs

Does the drive(s) crash with CDs burned on ther machines,
such as your nephew's off-site machine?

Yes. The ones they burn crash their respective systems, and so
do my test burns.

You loaded XP onto the computer somehow, so it appears that
not all CDs kill it. Do CDs that aren't of the
burned-at-home variety kill the machine?

Well, I don't have any UDF CDs or DVDs that are commercial, and
I haven't had my nephew or my other 2 buds do test burns for me,
but I think they'd do the BSOD thingy, too.

Does all of different media kill it? CD-W, CD-R, etc?

I don't use RW-anything, but CD-R, 4.7 gig DVD-R and the 8.x gig
DVD-R all crash SP2.

If it's the DVD drive, can you play DVDs? Can you burn
DVDs? Do DVDs kill it?

ISO and Joliet discs work 100.000%. Ditto for audio CDs that I
burned and ones I bought. Ditto for movie DVDs. All work just
peachy keen.

What happens when you burn a CD on the new machine and try
to use it on the old one?

Works 100.000% just fine. But, my nephew has a new DVD reader on
back-order for my new PC, so I can't test any of my newly burned
UDF DVD-Rs, but I have verified 4 months ago, and right up to
this morning, that all the old, intermediate, and brand new
disc, burned by Roxio 5, Nero xxx that came with my new burner,
and Roxio 8 /all/ work OK on SP1.

Have you had you nephew take a "killer CD" and run it on
some other computer he build with SP3 on it? Does it kill
them, too?

ain't no such thing as SP3, unless you're talking about Vista
beta or some beta version of XP Pro SP2. But, I don't beta test
for free, and I sure as hell would never beta test something as
dangerous as a Bill the Gates WMD!

Are you 100% sure you are using the right cables inside?

Yes. both drives have the newer cables with twice the number of
leads. But last month, when my nephew brought over the Sony
drive to try - which failed - he also brought and tried two of
the older-style CD/DVD ribbon cables. Didn't help a big. Groan,
and woe is me!

Good luck with it. With some more info, someone will
figure it out.

Well, I've searched until I get frustrated (and pissed off) for
4 months now, lurked in dozens of NGs in some way related to SP2
et al, and all I can find is verification of the problem. The
other folks I've talked to are also wandering around blind in
the desert search for a man of truth to save them, just like me.
<grin>

Will you nephew give you your money back if you return it?
;-) Will he waive the restocking fee for his favorite
uncle? Is he doing this to you because he's a Chevy guy?

Give what money back, Pat? It isn't in any way his fault. To
cllarify some, in my particular case, the Win XP Pro install CD
was a retail SP1 CD, and he installed SP2 off one of those free
CDs M$ sent me. But, both of my friends (but not my nephew and
his partner) bought their new boxes with SP2 pre-installed.

As best we all can tell collectively, it is almost certain that
the original SP2 install and/or upgrade is el fooked up wrt to
UDF in its entirety. It's remotely possible that SP2 from the CD
is OK and one of the updates killed me, but I really doubt it.
And, in looking at the MS KB and all the docs I can lay my hands
on, including perusing very technical reference books in stores,
XP in general and SP2 in particular, support the 4 or 5
incantations of UDF. Roxio 8 actually uses UDF 102, but there's
a newer 202 it doesn't have yet. Also, Roxio 8 can turn on or
turn off a "Joliet bridge", but either way, it crashes on me, as
do any new CD-Rs I burn with Roxio 5.

I am about this far from call my bud in Redmond since I have 3
conditions I can get free tech support on since I have a retail
licence. But, I suspect they are going to say "your install of
SP2 is broke, nuke your HD and re-install." Not! If it were just
me, I'd have done that a long time ago, right? But, it is
repeatable for others. The rub is that not that many people even
know about UDF, so most just stick with Joliet. And, so-called
MS Certified Engineers that I've talked to personally and my
nephew has talked to all say the same thing - nuke and re-
install. Ditto for a couple of local computer stores that have a
pay-one-price of about $95 to fix any problem. Well, Pat, I see
no upside to this, and a really big set of downsides to starting
all over.

So, when you get finished with Sunday brunch, then go to work
tomorrow, maybe you can spend some of your boss's time and find
me a fix! <big grin> And, thanks for trying.

Again, if you or anyone else reading this want the specific

you or others can. Thanks again.
