It would be 7 times faster if there wasn't any limitation on the camera
side!

For a '03 compact, you'd better assume that the camera is the limiting
factor to the writing speed... You might see a slight (if any)
improvement with the 80x, but not much more while shooting.

Otoh, if your card reader is USB2.0 and not that old, you will see much
better download speed, while transferring images to your computer.
Is that worth the price? Your call...
