Across units, generally yes. Across the screen of a single unit,
generally no.

Do you mean across the screen when viewed from the same position,
or across the screen when viewed from the same angle for each pixel?
This is something I had not seen myself or heard about.

The edges sometimes glow in various colors as you look at the screen
from different angles. The cheaper Dell LCD monitors have a green glow
at the bottom. Some also have a faint static pattern caused by small
variations in pixel quality.

The good news is that LCD monitors don't care much about magnetic
fields. I've had a number of CRTs with color purity problems due to
stray or natural magnetic fields. They look good in one spot but
terrible in another. It's a major PITA to open them up and re-align all
the little magnets on the back of the tube.

They can be just as bad or nearly perfect depending on the resolution
and quality. Last time I went shopping, most low-res LCD screens looked
very vivid but most high-res screens were dull and grey. Apple's Cinema
Displays stood out as the only high-res LCDs that looked vivid under
normal lighting.

That's a very interesting observation. However when changing the
resolution of my crappy Dell monitor, vividness does not appear altered.

The resolution of an LCD screen is physical.

Why would you suppose so? And why would it matter?
If you're going to do serious work on any monitor -- CRT or LCD --
you'll take the time to profile and calibrate it.

It would matter because color calibration based on LCD monitor type
would be less advisable if there were lots of color variation by sample,
but more advisable if color variation is minimal.
