Do you honestly think that Reseller Ratings is anymore reliable than a
recommendation from Brad and five or six other guys/gals in this group
or from friends down the street? To sit and analyze the numbers from
Reseller Ratings as it were some sort or oracle is pretty amusing too,
especially when you go a little deeper and actually read some of their
reviews. I'd bet fully half the complaints are from people not
qualified to operate a manual toothbrush. I feel certain many of
these are from the keyboards of competitors, just as a fair portion of
the positive comments come from the complimented company itself. On
line buying is an acquired skill and even veterans do get shafted now
and again. To suggest that Reseller Ratings is anything more than a
guideline is wishful thinking. A guideline to be considered in
conjunction with other sources maybe, but surely not scientific enough
to worry about a 4% fluctuation in a company's rating, six month or
otherwise. It's all kind of subjective at best.
Having said that, I'll pass this along to the OP. I've used Digital
Foto Club, BuyDig, NewEgg, B&H, Adorama, Amazon, Wal Mart.com, Sam's
Club.com and even Dell and Ebay with good success. Some of these have
pretty crappy "Reseller Ratings", but I've found that persistence has
always got me what I wanted in the end. You learn over time what to
buy from which and how to make the best of even a bad situation. For
seller ratings, look at Yahoo, Froogle, Bizrate, Ebay, Epinions and
yes, even anecdotal Usenet commentary. Put it all together and you get
a picture. You might still get ripped, but then that can happen at
Sears or Circuit City too. I do like Amazon as a pass through, since
they have a 'backup' guarantee if the merchant fails you, so you do
have some additional recourse. Same can be said for EBay if you use
Pay Pal and make sure the seller has the "PayPal Protection" logo on
the sale page, which covers you up to $1000 if something does go wrong.
($25 deductible.) It's all a big hassle if you have problems, but
stick with it and you will usually get satisfaction unless it's some
fly by night outfit that you can find nothing but bad feedback about or
none at all. Oh yeah, always pay by credit card or Paypal. A gold
card or one that offers additional warranties and buyer protection is a
good idea too. There, that's just one more opinion.
