All xD cards that I'm aware of are fast enough that they shouldn't
restrict the Fuji S9000 in any way. CF cards on the other hand can
be found that are much slower as well as faster than xD. If you get
CF cards just make sure that they aren't really cheap, slow ones.
Most will be at least as fast as xD cards. If you need really large
cards, such as for holding many large RAW files or long videos, CF
is better since xD's maximum size is currently 1GB. Eventually
they'll be made in larger sizes, but CF is already available in 2, 4
and 8GB card sizes.
Rather than getting a single large card, you might want to get
two, which would make it easier to continue shooting when a card
fills and has to be copied to a computer or backed up to a portable
device. If both cards are the same type you'll have to store the
second card somewhere. Not a big problem, really, unless you have a
tendency to lose tiny objects. But if you get different card types,
the second card can be more conveniently stored in the camera
itself.
For quite a while xD cards were much more expensive, but earlier
this year I bought a CF card and an xD card from B&H, both 1GB and
both for $89. I'm not familiar with current card prices.
