The way Windows XP works with AVI files is that the OS will attempt to
read through the AVI file when it is accessed by any directory
operation. Corrupt AVI files will fail the read process and crash at
least Windows Explorer. This was a known issue in XP RTM; I'm not sure
if it still applies to XP SP2. In any event, there is a registry fix
for the corrupt AVI file problem: http://bink.nu/?ArticleID=709 (note
that this fix is for "large" AVI files, but I've had the problem on 50MB
AVI files from my Canon G3).
I am having some difficulty understanding exactly what is happening from
your description, but it seems that there is a possibility that you are
not actually transfering (copying or moving) the files from the camera
to the hard disk, but only generating a shortcut to the AVI files still
residing on the camera?
The fact that you indicate that the crashes occur when opening or
selecting the folder containing the AVI files is crucial and suggests
that the folder itself is a shortcut to a camera folder that cannot be
accessed since the camera is powered off or physically disconnected.
XP, or Windows Explorer more properly, will appear to hang or become
unresponsive as it searches for the location of the folder or files
indicated in the shortcut path statement. Windows Explorer will
eventually generate a "file not found", "path not found" or similar
dialog - this can take several minutes and appear to be a crash when in
fact it is not.
Anyway, keep us posted on the solution you find.
