I have a Nikon CP 5600 that I've been pretty happy with, 16 scene selection
(but 1 is underwater) I find though that I only really use auto or portrait
mode because I usually just take pics of my daughter. It comes with
batteries from Nikon that are rechargeable and last a long time. The one
complaint I have with it is that it takes a long time for the flash to
recycle after a picture. I don't know how other brands would fare in this
department.
I believe a lot of people who have the canon cameras really like them as
well, those are the 2 brands I considered when getting a camera.
