I'm new to digital photography and no expert. But I have done some
research, both here and with my son, who's a professional photographer.
Here's what I've found. Memory card seldom fail, especially the good
ones (Sandisk & Lexar). But occasionally, they do. So buy the good
cards. If I'm shooting a one-time event, I'll make sure I switch cards
sometime during the event. If a card fails, at least I'll have some
pix. And why not, it takes less than a minute to switch.
Hope this helps in your world.
