David, I think you either have a virus or some bad thing in there, it's
possible the CD-RW drive is toast, but run your virus update and then run a
complete virus scan on it. Just for the sake of argument, what motherboard,
and is the Bios up to the latest revision? Download Spybot and update the
database, the run a check on your system using that.

Do you have two CD drives or only one? Do you have any friends who are into
computers? If so see if you can borrow a CD-RW from them and try it in your
machine if it works then you know the drive is dead. It's sometimes hard to
take back a drive that does not work, if you do purchase a new one, buy it
from Best Buy, they have pretty good customer service. If you have a
western digital hard drive, the web site for them has some drive checking
utilities and you can make sure the hard drive is ok. Download the latest
patches for Microsoft XP, and then turn off the Firewall inside windows for
a while to see if it's causing the problem (should not but you never know).

Once you reinstall Nero (yes your friend was correct, much better than Roxio
stuff, although the interface is a little harder to work in) download all
the latest patches for that version and install those as well. Make sure
you don't have any suspect software, that is software you don't have a
license for or is possibly a fake copy, Microsoft will verify the version of
windows is a authorized copy.

Once you do all that stuff, give us a report back and let us know what is
happening.
