DMM testing batteries under load -- what resistance?

Slightly off topic:
I recently bought a digital multimeter and have found it quite interesting
and useful. But I want to test batteries, both NiMH AA cells and Li-ion 3.7V
and 7.4V batteries, under load.
1. What sort of resistor(s) do I need to do this?
2. Any tips on a good way to briefly connect the resistor to the battery for
taking the reading? It looks like one of those operations for which three or
four hands would be handy.
I used an analog VOM for plotting the time/voltage curves of NiCd batteries
through a resistance when I was flying R/C models, but that was over 20
years ago and I don't now remember the details.
