Canon Ixus 700 Digital Camera

Bought the above digital camera in July this year.
I carried it in my handbag for a few days protected in a flimpsy bag.
I have now tried to use it and switched the ON button and to my horror
saw that the LCD screen has a really large black stripe and a smaller
black and purple stripe and nothing works now on the camera - I can
only switch it on and off. Put a new fully charged battery in which of
course made no difference.
When the camera is switched off, the stripes can also be seen.
Does anyone know what could have gone wrong ?

Is it a leakage on the LCD screen - is it repairable ?

Obviously I am very upset as the camera is new and I thought I had it
well protected.

Please advise.
