Well I'm sure some of you already had, and I'm sure many of you have requirements that mean they have to stay with windows, but if any of you is curious and have standard requirements then I suggest you give linux a try.
I played with some distributions over the past week and I was very impressed.
My suggestion would be SUSE 10 which just came out. It can be downloaded from the web. There's also ubuntu. Those were the easiest to install, SUSE was a little better in terms of hardware detection, but it came on 5 CDS, whereas ubuntu was only one.
Both those come with the GIMP, and if you have an internet connection you can easily add any other apps you need.
If you mainly use JPEGs then you can take the card out of the camera and just read it - SUSE does an automount I think. I'm sure there's more to it, like gPhoto http://www.gphoto.org/, and dcraw http://www.aim-dtp.net/aim/digicam/dcraw/ but I haven't looked into it yet.
If you have an AMD64 machine like mine you'll be pleased to know that both SUSE and ubuntu support it, just look for the AMD64 ISOs. If you have an older machine you'll also be pleased to know that there are other distributions that are optimised to be fast on older machines.
Now what impressed me? It's a fast and very stable OS. And especially if you use a polished distro like SUSE, it looks immaculate.

Ok.. SUSE from Novell a company who used to own the Network and LOST it. Better SUSE remained independent. Novell has pretty sucessfully killed anything they invested in the last 15 years. Geez and they own the rights to SUSE which is licensed from, SCO who is suing everybody and their cousin over the rights to the UNIX kernel which they think they own. SUSE.. sorry. Won't take part in the Open Software killer.
That being said, I am a big UNIX fan. I manage a 14 server SUN Solaris farm at work and my machines of choice at home are my Apple OS X machines. Why? Because Apple has put the best GUI on top of a UNIX OS.. period! The Gnome desktop is OK but inter application communcication is still a bit clumsy and varies greatly depending on the App. GIMP is pretty cool but try getting support for an array of scanners, monitors and printers and and make color management work for all of these. Its hard enough in supported OS's. It is harder in the OSF market. My time is worth more than the that. Yes you can find darn near any solution to a problem in Linux, but it sometimes takes time.. which I don't have. I use a Linux machine at home as a file server, cheap, easy to configure and does it well. But, it still has some may to go as a desktop OS.
Does Nikon Capture run on Linux? Nope. PhotoShop? Nope, Paint Shop? No, iTunes? No, Open Office? Yes of course, and I like Open Office.. but I still can't maintain complete compatibility with Microsoft Office... and guess what.. they own the market. Whatvever I do, must remain compatible with Microsoft. Therefore the Apple Mac is the best choice. UNIX and compatibilty with Microsoft Office..
