Re: Film scanner - on the brink of parting with cash

This is not a flame. I really am curious about this:
My honest recommendation would be that you go back to a WinXP computer so
the scanner will have the horsepower necessary to process these images and
you will have an OS with a future.
Dual processor Macs, the only Macs worth owning, are an irrational choice
with regard to price and performance.
That's like paying new Mercedes prices for used Buick level
performance. Some Buicks have big engines but who would pay Mercedes prices
for one?
What is the rationale, as opposed to fundamental Macangelicalism (which no
one but other Macaholics cares about), for abandoning a perfectly good
scanner and superior hardware/software platform for what is ultimately a
horizontal (as opposed to vertical) scanner "upgrade" mated to slower, more
expensive hardware? Even Apple has seen the hardware light and is officially
moving to Intel processors. You do realize your new Mac has already been
declared obsolete by Apple, which nevertheless was happy to sell you the
box. When Apple switches processors it will instantly abandon current users
as it has done with previous paradigm shifts.
Yes a G2 may minimally outperform a second tier Wintel box on one or two
selected Photoshop filters. A human can beat a race horse out of the
starting blocks too. The quarter mile is a different race.
Properly implementedcolor management is no different on the Mac than on
Windows. In fact there are more devices available for color management use
with Windows machines.
OS issues are moot. Adobe Photoshop is Adobe Photoshop whether in a Windows
or Mac environment. If you are not used to a Mac the rules are as idiotic and
arbitrary as any other OS.
Another serious question: when Apple switches to Intel processors and ports
its current Unix-clone OS to the x86 chip will Adobe find it worthwhile to
port Photoshop to that OS for what will be far less than 4% of the world
market? Since Adome and Macromedia merged Apple is a miniscule part of their
revenue base.
