After a year with my first digital camera, I bought a new camera. The first one featured 3.1 megapixels and I often e-mailed photos to friends and family. If your 3.1 MP camera produced image files that were only 0.25-0.33 MB in size, you were either not utilizing the whole 3.1 MP size or you were using a high degree of compression or both. If you selected LARGEST size and HIGHEST quality compression, your file size should have been around 1.0 MB.
The new camera features 5 megapixels and the file size for each .jpg can be as much as 2MB larger than the .jpgs produced by the 3.1 megapixel camera.
I see that the new camera has a setting to make photos in a smaller fle size.
Can someone tell me the disadvantages of saving pictures in the smaller size?
Are there any utilities for the PC that will take as input a larger file size picture and optimize it to a smaller size?
I'm seeing (approx) 2.3 MB pictures in the large file format. My 3.1 megapixel camera produced files that were 1/4 to 1/3 MB in size.
I would recommend the following:
1. Get a large memory card, about 512 MB or more.
2. Shoot all pictures at the Largest size and Highest quality (lowest compression).
3.If you want to send the images by email, Win Xp will automatically reduce the image size to about 640 x 480 pixels so it will fit on most monitor screens without scrolling.
If you don't have Win Xp, you will need an image editor utility to do the resampling for you. IRFANVIEW is an excellent free utility that will do this and much, much more.
