Sony announced last year that it planned to standardise its own memory stick
cards as Magic Gate types. Pro type cards have been Magic Gate from the
start. Third party brands may well continue to supply the old and slow non
Magic Gate type.
It's possible there are still some of the old blue (non Magic Gate) memory
sticks around; these are limited to 128MB max or 256MB consisting of two
banks of 128MB and a small switch to select between the two. They are also
very slow compared to the Pro cards. Older Sony cameras are not compatible
with Pro cards, though all the newer cameras can take either kind.
I have heard people say that some memory is set aside for Magic Gate
functions, but if that is true, it's a very small proportion of the overall
capacity if the card.
