I have had ONE virus in 24 years of using computers in my home. It was on an Atari 800, and came in on a diskette (floppy) from a friend. It was of the type that spreads itself to any other disk loaded. I caught it immediately, and killed it. So much for MS. I have never had a virus on any of my MS machines. I did have a trojan because I was examining one to see how it worked, and accidentally double-clicked on it while trying to move it.
Just taking reasonable precautions against infection is quite effective.
I take precautions against viruses etc., but when I got this comp. a
couple of years ago it came with av software switched on and a virus ready
built in - no help from dealer. It now has nothing but Mandriva 2006 beta2
running and very successfully at that. I have been using linux now for the
best part of two years.

I have actually run Windows for long periods without either firewall or antivirus installed. Configuration and vigilance can prevent infection. But I wouldn't recommend that for anyone who isn't very experienced with computers.
