You tell 'em!
Photo is, indeed, an abbreviation of photograph and apostrophes have their
place in some abbreviations (e.g. them and 'em, if you like) but in this
use, it's clearly ridiculous, as you have so skilfully pointed out and
second only to the perennial abuse of the apostrophe in it/its/it's.
It's a nice day (for it is)
The dog had wolfed its dinner (possessive - but no apostrophe)
Even auto-correction in MS Word gets this right.
