Olympus's E-10 and 20 were visionary designs.  They should have stuck
with them instead of aping the likes of Canon and Nikon.

But they *did* stick with that design!  The E-1, E-3 and E-30 all
share the same basic layout, the significant difference being that the
lenses on the Four Thirds designs are interchangeable.  The E-10 and
E-20 had a non-interchangeable 35-140mm (35mm equivalent) zoom.

I do wonder whether Olympus intended the E-30's model designation  to
be some kind of a tribute to the excellence of the E-10 and E-20.  The
E-30 is the best Four Thirds DSLR so far.

I wish they had. The E's that came after the E-1 had almost totally
divested themselves of the forward-looking design path. That is why
so many where disappointed by the lumpen E-3, a paen to the ancient
form-factors of Canon and Nikon.

It is difficult to imagine who would buy the E-3. Good points: It has
an outstanding standard zoom lens with the fastest available AF. Bad
point: It has a 10 MP sensor that gets very noisy above ISO 400 so it
is handicapped to the point of being almost useless. Olympus Europe
at least had the sense to drop the price quickly and substantially in
order to try and sell some. I don't think they succeeded.

They still have hundreds of unsold E-1s too. :-(

The front-forward design at Olympus
is long dead. It was SO much better having a flat side panel with all
the switches on it instead of switches being on the back and (!) front
of the cameras now.

Agree 100%. The nearest thing in terms of overall layout was probably
the Sony DSC-R1, which handles superbly. Sony have apparently
developed a successor which could be introduced later in 2010.
Obviously, it isn't an SLR.

Another good feature of the E-10 and E-20 was the pellicle mirror.
With no flapping mirror there was only shutter vibration to contend
with. The non-interchangeable lens meant that dust was never a
problem.

Sony plans to offer this feature on at least one Alpha DSLR, but that
will be a mistake, given the problems of keeping the mirror clean.

But Sony Alpha is all about making mistakes - the first of which was
to buy a product line that had already failed.
