Have any of you fellows tried some of the old Minolta AF lenses with the

Someone else mentioned the good discussions on that topic to be found
at photoclubalpha.
I don't have any old Minolta AF lenses, mine are even older non-AF
ones. The problem with old Minolta lenses on an Alpha is that the
mount to sensor distance differs, meaning you can't get infinity focus
without a mount converter with optical elements in it. Unfortunately
most of the optical converters aren't good enough to bring the quality
of good glass over.
As a result of reading through the stuff on Minolta/Sony converters at
photoclunalpha I experimentally got myself an old 2nd hand Minolta
optical converter which was rumoured to be good (Minolta 2X M/A -S),
choosing the 2X because that would throw some of my old primes into
ranges not well covered with best quality by my digital lenses. So far
I've only tested my 200m which with the 2X becomes a 400mm, which is
useful extra reach beyond my 18-250mm Sony zoom, and with obviously
better image quality than the rather soft results the 18-250mm gives
at 250mm.
If as expected I'll get some useful improvements in quality or
aperture at some other focal lengths from a few of the others it'll be
worth hanging on to the lenses and converter until I can afford more
modern glass of the same quality.
