Why? How hard is it to subscribe to another group?

Subscribing couldn't be easier. In fact I've already done so,
since it only requires setting a flag in my newsreader's database.
You've already read my reasons for not wanting to access that

X-posting has its limits and one of them, IMO, is that it should not be
used for substantive discussions.

or contribute to them. I just looked at the most recent 500 replies
in that newsgroup and the problem isn't limited to just "two
aus.photo 'nizens". It's a microcosm of what this newsgroup will
become if it continues devolving, and it would be a waste of time
skipping from SI_stone to SI_stone to avoid sinking into the
rpe.35mm cesspool, especially since some of its SI_stones are
already fouled with slime. If the SI is supposed to be about having
'fun', it needs to reside in a better neighborhood.
What neighborhood would you suggest?

I'm afraid that I have no good suggestions, even though I feel
that this ng would be a better host for your SI.

rec.photo.digital.slr-systems might indeed be a better home for the 21st century... or alt.photography better yet. Cross-posting is not a bad solution though, it has become so common that people should have developed a way of dealing by now. I read in 35mm first, then kill those threads in dslr, digital, then alt. If someone removes the cross-posting, fine. I have limited patience. The shoot-in is a usenet phenomenon, so I'm not inclined to go for a blog though it's certainly an obvious option to consider.

I vote for cross-posting: a democratic method. I see no reason to drag a bunch of P&S or medium/large format/video folks into r.p.e.35mm who have no interest in that topic. If people feel this is an intrusion, they can easily kill the threads & move on. The SI has always allowed any type of camera. There was an exclusiveness to having it in the old school group which gave it some level of quality control but things have changed and there aren't that many folks left who only subscribe to the 35mm group so include them and others, nothing to lose there.

What I don't like
about using rpe.35mm is that it not only has the same familiar faces
engaging in their usual infantile squabbles, it has more unfamiliar
ones engaged in the same trivial pursuits. The time wasted learning
who to avoid is just that - time wasted.

35mm has some good folks, cross-post and they can contribute without messing with anyone. Same goes for all the groups. If someone wants to play games with trimming cross-posts, fine: that's their right, we're all adults, free to act as we wish.

I am thinking about a blog for comments, but I don't like breaking it off of the group.

Is there "blogware" I can host at aliasimages.com ?

I know practically nothing about blogs, so I can't help you much
there. It would have one big advantage over using newsgroups,
however. That is, not all news servers are born equal. Some have
excellent retention, but others have miserably short retention, even
for text based newsgroups. And almost all photographers, even those
shooting nothing but film, wouldn't have any problem accessing a
blog with their browser. Many of them, though, will *never* venture
into newsgroup land.

It's been many years since I accessed a list server, but lists
seem to resemble blogs in some ways. Have you considered using a
moderated newsgroup to host the SI? My normal preference would be
for unmoderated newsgroups, because censorship abuse, whether real
or imagined will always be cause for concern. But even if you give
my wish for a better neighborhood no weight, if someone wanted to
create a new SI from scratch, he/she would be wise to locate it
where access is easiest for the greatest number of potential SI
submitters, just as developers wouldn't want to locate a new
shopping mall 100 miles out in the boonies.

When the SI was born, rpe.35mm was probably healthier and much
more active than it is now. Today it might as well be out in the
boonies. If the SI's success is dependent on rpe.35mm's health, its
future seems pretty bleak. Despite my pessimism, I hope your SI is
a success, and some day I may find a more congenial place to submit
my "Joy Ride" photo. :)
