Canon (and probably quite a few other camera manufacturers) offer interchangeable focusing screens. I have never experimented with
different focusing screens. Has anyone had any experience of these on
modern DSLR's?
The slowest lens I use is 2.8 (although I do sometimes shoot with a
1.4 converter attached, which obviously changes lenses to f/4). I do
find that the DOF through the viewfinder is not particularly accurate
at big apertures especially when shooting bigger than f/2. So, I was
wondering whether is would be beneficial for me to change the focusing
screen to a super precision matte screen, to make the DOF through the
VF more accurate? Would there be any major disadvantages?
OT with respect to DOF, but I find the grid screens helpful to keep the horizon level and the buildings straight-up-and-down.
with normal f/l lenses - yes. With wide angle, I think that sometimes the grid-lines actually can make things worse - too much mucking around deciding which should be lined up with what - a distraction to composition unless you're only lining up with a horizon.
