From my own casual tests, there is a noticeable quality difference betweenmy wife's Panasonic FZ20 (5MP) and my own Nikon D40 (6MP) even at low ISO
and even when viewed on a 1.9MP display. Although the Leica lens on the
Panasonic is amongst the best in its class, if not /the/ best in its
class, the Nikon zoom lenses with a smaller zoom range than that of the
Panasonic (36-432mm, 12:1) can provide better quality. The Nikon image
appears a little sharper, although I admit that I have not made any
attempt to ensure that the two cameras have similar sharpening settings.
Of course, my wife has a better eye for a good photo, so hers often win
irrespective of the technical quality!
