The old Sony Multiscan G500 21-inch CRT beast gasped it's last breaths tonight with a few flickers, fading to a dim blue image, after months of epileptic degaussing fits. I think it was about 10 years old & served me well.
Any ideas what to replace it with? Out of curiosity I looked at an Apple 30" cinema display ($1,729 @ B&H) and apparently it can run on a PC with a DVI plug... I have a laptop with regular monitor plug, what is a DVI plug? Now, being more realistic, I recall folks talking a while ago about something like a 24" Samsung or something like that as a pretty good way to go?
I ran the laptop at 1280x800 as a second screen and didn't use very high res on the 21" CRT beast due to no longer having sharp young eyes. I used to run 1200x1600 then 1280x960, and I don't have a TV so that's what I watched videos on.
You need to find out the maximum res your laptop can provide... unlike a CRT, an
LCD monitor must be ran at it's maximum res.
For a 24", that is 1920 x 1200, probably beyond your laptops capability.
Most likely not the 30" 2546 x 1600 but the old 21" CRT went up to some silly resolution (more than it could resolve) and that worked fine.
A 22" is 1680 x 1050, that may be OK. I just bought an Acer, and it's gorgeous
for only $250.
A 19" is usually 1280 x 1024, that may be adequate for you.
Of course, there are a few other weird sizes out there, but these are the common
ones.
