I have accidentally left it on many times in the past without noticeable
battery drain. It uses a small charge to indicate the count of remaining
shots on the top LCD and 'sharpen' the viewfinder.

What firmware rev did you have before and what rev is it now?

I upgraded once, it says A&B 2.0

I have been at the rev level for many months and have not experienced this
behavior. If I leave my D200 turned on accidently, it goes into a "sleep"
mode that use very little power.
