The subject line says it all.
I swapped my D300 with a 40D for a while on Saturday and was dumbfounded
at the thing. I got rid of all my Canon gear and bought Nikon earlier
this year so it was a step back in time for me to hold a familiar camera
again.
The 40D I borrowed had a "kit" lens on it 17 - 85 IS, from memory. The
images it produced were pretty questionable IMO. The lens simply has no
resolving power past about 4 meters. Any people in a scene past about 5
or 6 meters have no detail and the CA was in every image where light and
dark met. I guess you can expect that with a $100 lens but these are not
cheap lenses at $700 AUD+.
The really curious thing is the way the camera defaults to ISO 200 but
produces the same load of noise at high ISO as a 20 or 30D does. Has any
owner of one of these cameras got any advise for the distraught owner
other than "dump it and buy a Nikon". I can't recall having these
problems with a 20D.
The primary problem she has is the contrast level of images. Set on
"natural" with contrast reduced by 1, any fill flashed images open in
Lightroom with blocked shadow and blown or near blown highlights.
Definitely can't use a flash at 1 meter or less distance.
I suggested she turn off "highlight preservation", not knowing if it has
such a setting or not. The owner doesn't speak English so I'm asking
around to see if there is something about the settings I didn't see in
the brief time I used it.
Without sounding like a Canon basher (which I probably am) I would have
been really disappointed if I'd bought 40Ds instead of the Nikons. Quite
apart from the image quality, the Nikon lenses resolve very well...
They'd want to for their cost! Serious advise sought here.
