This is the fastest of the low threshold; if the light is not enough,
the camera will shift to higher ISO instead of using a slower speed.
1/250 should be fast enough for any auto mode. Unless you use a 600mm
lens in which case you would like to by-pass the auto function all
together. But that's just my opinion.
200, 280, 400, 560mm. No there are plenty of situations I encounter where

do not wish to bypass this function, as I use it all the time in aperture
priority mode on a D200. However, 1/250s just isn't fast enough given the
subjects.
He can shoot in M or S and get the desired results for setting shutter

Yes he can with the D300... I just tried it...
The auto-ISO is a great feature and I use it pretty much all the
time.
It is a great feature, because it provides a flexibility one can not
achieve otherwise. You can't have it both ways.
