nonsense.

At least Canon had the balls to make a clean cut when they went
from the fully mechanical and no (generally) AF at all FT mount
to the fully integrated, electronical, lens detecting and AF
capable EOS system and it's EF mount.

canon *had* to make a clean break because the fd breech mount was a
horrible mount. nikon was able to maintaine compatiblity while keeping
the same mount, and 40 year old lenses still mount and work perfectly
fine.

as for metering, there are mechanical coupling pins that need to be
added in addition to the firmware needed to support it

Matrix/evaluative metering may be degraded, as the camera cannot
tell if it's "outside in full sunlight",

nikon's matrix metering uses both the intensity and colour of the light
in multiple areas to determine what type of scene it is to help
calculate the correct exposure. therefore, it can easily tell if it's
outdoors or indoors.

Canon manages to meter with any and all and even *without*
any lens on the camera, the firmware routines for metering
are all there, So There!

actually, canon's stop-down metering is not totally linear, and at
smaller f/stops there's a deviation from proper exposure. it might be
within the latitude of the film or correctable in the raw file, but
it's definitely not 'correct,' based on a separate exposure meter.

Overdesigned bridge camera.

nonsense.

It never came to Nikon that some people want to take advantage
of the great number of old Nikon lenses with a not-too-expensive
digital body, since digital bodies are like analog bodies, cheap
and basically a black box with a shutter ...

it's a marketing decision. the person who buys a $400 slr is generally
*not* the person who is going to collect lenses. the typical buyer of
a d40/d40x will buy one or two lenses, and that's it. yes, there are a
few exceptions, just as there are people who buy a top of the line body
and never use the features it offers over an entry level model.

people who want to use old lenses would probably select a different
camera because they want additional features that the d40 does not
offer, including flash commander mode, depth of field preview, mirror
lockup, more sophisticated autofocus, etc. for the vast majority of
users, the d40 has an appropriate feature mix. it isn't going to
satisfy everyone, nor does it need to. that's why there are other
cameras in the lineup.

I can, sort of, understand the AF-motor missing. But the
metering debacle? That restriction is just picayune, not even
cheese-paring.

fewer parts and lower cost on a camera whose users won't ever miss the
feature. it's a win-win. plus, with digital, the lack of metering is
even less of an issue -- just make a good guess, look at the result,
and adjust accordingly.

what baffles me is why canon only had spot metering in the 1 series
bodies until the 30d, something my old compact digicam had (i guess the
canon 20 is a 'bridge camera' based on that metric). in fact, that was
a key reason why i *didn't* choose canon.

Try stacking two or three tele converters and see how, ah,
accurate the AF is, due to mechanical limitations. Or try
extension tubes, the longer, the merrier. These problems do
not exist in electric coupling.

i'd test it if i had more than one, but the negative impact to image
quality is sufficient that even *one* teleconverter is enough (and
sometimes too much). i've heard of people stacking teleconverters, so
it probably does work, and based on using the one i have, i doubt there
will be a problem with screw coupling through multiple teleconverters
(or extension tubes, which can also have mechanical coupling).

Mind teaching your sorry excuse for a newsreader _not_ to
wrap URLs?

There already _is_ an extra return character inserted, by your NUA!
And as such it cannot be copy-and-pasted w/o editing.

nothing was added. the url spanned more than one line because it was
94 characters long (96 if you count <>). it was also properly enclosed
within angle brackets. i'd look up the relevant rfc, but i have more
important things to do today. and it's not relevant.

the point still stands in that it's a *very* limited quantity lens.

Yes, it is. So? The "dark side of the moon" f/0.7 lenses
are not exactly widely available, either ...

so why suggest it at all? it's *well* past most people's budget and it
has a *very* limited use. in fact, it's not even ideal for most
wildlife photography. who the hell would want to carry that (and a
tripod capable of supporting its weight) on a hike? or do you do all
wildlife photography taken right next to your vehicle? do you even
*do* wildlife photography?
