What I am looking for is a small handheld device that uses the USB port

general
camera control.

i've seen adaptations for palm handheld devices. perhaps there's a
windows mobile version. the protocol is known, the rest is just
software :)

Even for the manufacturers it should be easier and cheaper to use the
USB
port instead of having to include additional hard- and firmware for the
proprietary ports.

that i can't answer. it does seem to make sense to use the usb port
for both rather than have an entire second port for just a remote, but
perhaps there's more to it than that.

Cabled remotes can be somewhat advanced with intervalometer, etc, getting
their power through the dedicated cable. I assume the USB cable can't send
power out from the camera. Full remote control is a job for a laptop or
'palmtop'.

I think even simple remote control through the USB cable would require some
"smarts" in the controller that may introduce some delays in the chain, for
simple shutter release remotes there is no delay. Each USB controller would
potentially need to be differently coded to work.

Surely, the simple solution, would be top include an old-fasioned screw-in cable-release connection somewhere on the
body of the camera. A micro-switch is hardly rocket-science - but I guess the manufacturers now see more profit in
selling a remote.
