Rather good news on the "catch-up" for Nikon users, but no free lunch.
The clipped shadows might be an issue for shooting raw - exposing to preserve the highlights, post-processing to bring out shadow detail.
The D300 & 40D seem to each have strengths & weaknesses and are pretty much comparable.
The D3 looks really good on the preliminary charts at the bottom.
