you find that you need a second battery? the d50 can shoot 1500+
pictures per charge. how many pictures do you shoot without being near
a power outlet?
as for batteries, any en-el3 battery will work in a d50 (-el3, -el3a,
-el3e), whereas recent nikon cameras (e.g. d80) require a en-el3e.
third party batteries aren't created equal (see link below). if
something does go wrong and nikon finds out that a non-nikon battery
was used, they warranty will be voided.

What are you hooking up to your d50 to allow you to get 1500+ pics? The
D40X battery is good for about 520 pics and it is an improvement over the
d50 (in battery life).
