Rather good news on the "catch-up" for Nikon users, but no free lunch.
The clipped shadows might be an issue for shooting raw - exposing to
preserve the highlights, post-processing to bring out shadow detail.
No this has been the case for previous nikons as well (in particular,
the d200 which I have), and in the region where it's important you
generally have so much noise that it's completely useless anyway.
Assuming, that is, that
a) I scanned it correctly and it refers to subtracting an offset and
setting the lower bound of the result to zero; I haven't read the
article carefully yet;
b) It's similar to the d200.
Is it ever an issue pulling up shadows by about one stop at lower iso?
I'm struggling to find a reason why I shouldn't get a D300. That's the closest I've found as I routinely pp to use "digital grad ND filter" effect with layer blends. OTOH I'm still using a d70, which is not famous for low noise, and with that it's not a problem with raw and occasional NR on the "lifted" layer (ie before blending) where higher ISO was used in the shot. I couldn't see much difference at all in this aspect between the d70 and D80 raw files, either with CaptureNX, or with RSE (hacked to open D80 raw files) The D300 looks like it kills any previous dx nikon for high iso jpegs, but from normal iso raw I'm not sure that it's such a big leap ahead.
