Is it really that big of a difference? I always thought sharpness is
primarily a function of the lens, not camera. Or have they (Canon) gone for
weak AA filter in 40D? If this is the case, havent the demosaicing algorythm
changed?

Or maybe just more in-camera sharpening, or stronger contrast.
Most people cannot do a lab examination of sharpness, lacking
the equipment and knowledge.

Could also be a 'I have to prove to myself that my purchase choice
was right'.
