Hi
I've noticed that my Samsung Syncmaster 172w is set to 1024x768 when I
change it to 1280x1024 I get the distortion as well. My monitor set itself
up when I loaded in the drivers for it so I never altered them. Do I now
need to rescale the photos? I've checked with a couple of friends and their
square monitors are set to 1024x768

I have a small website (link below) created on a 17" Samsung SyncMaster
172W
monitor (Wide screen) & friends of mine say that the proportions of the
photos when viewed on a conventional TFT/CRT monitor are a bit narrow and
tall. I would have thought that the proportions would be automatically
adjusted. How can I correct this.
The vast majority of the photos were taken on Nikon D70 & D80 some are the
original frame size.
Any thoughts on this.

There are 2 questions to ask...
1: How did you resize the images, and did you make sure the aspect ratio
wasn't
adjusted?
2: What kind of monitor does your friend have?
Note that most monitors only display square pixels at their maximum (LCD)
or
optimum (CRT) size.
Your monitor runs at 1280x768, a ratio of 1.666. The measurement of the
viewable
screen must also have this ratio.
All of my Samsung monitors work fine. Conventional monitors often have a
size of
1280x1024, a ratio of 1.25. The viewable area on a Samsung 912A, 19" LCD,
is
37.5cm x 30cm, also 1.25, so the picture is displayed properly. On a
larger HD
monitor, the 245 wide screen, the pixel resolution is 1920x1200, or 1.6,
and the
visible size is 52 x 32, or 1.625, close enough with my rough measurement!
