Re: Sony's new prosumer: Canon going to cringe?

Better amplifiers only help to the point where their noise is no longer
significant, compared to the noise of the sensor itself. Ultimately,
signal/noise ratio is limited by photon quantization noise, proportional to
the square root of the number of photons. No amplifier can overcome that --
the only way is to get more photons, i.e larger pixels.
Personally, I believe that the DR problem will be solved by building sensors
that are similar to the non-linear characteristics of film: gradual decrease
of sensitivity at high exposure, instead of the hard limit of a well filling
up of today's photodetector technology.

Curious, but how is Canon going to squeeze out more DR if the pixel
count climbs?

Better amplifiers. That's the only way. You have to increase the
maximum electron count in the well, so you have to get the amplifier
noise down (and the digitized bit up of course) to get the
better possible range. This is not easy especially with smaller pixels.
