Are there any 'hidden' fixes not being openly advertised by

The only 'fixes' I'm aware of would be the CHDK software for some
Powershot cameras using Canon's DIGIC II engine. Canon wouldn't
advertise this as they didn't produce it. Canon may even have taken
steps to make sure that such software wouldn't work in future Canon
cameras by making appropriate changes to DIGIC III.
Should users always upgrade the to the latest firmware as soon as possible?
No, not always. There's usually a small risk that the firmware
update process won't be successful, and then you might have to send
your camera off to Canon to have it repaired. If the firmware
update fixes something that has been causing you problems, or if it
adds new useful features, then by all means do the update. But if a
vacation or some other important camera outing is imminent, it might
be safer to update the firmware when you return from the vacation.
