Debatable. I'd expect the 18-55 to be wide enough.

If you've got a bean bag and most of your viewing will be over the side of a
safari truck, I think I might not bother with either -pod.

Make sure you have any necessary adapters. AC will probably be 250V 50Hz; the
vehicle's cigarette lighter may be a different size or voltage than you're
used to.

I'm glad he said that. I was going to offer the same suggestion, but concluded
that I was probably out of my depth, having never used that lens.

Read it on the plane. Spend your time in Africa observing and taking pictures.

: Great advice..malaria pills are seperate things to my photography kit...I'd
: LOVE tot ake the 300mm F4 L, but my budget is pretty much done for this
: trip, I couldn't afford it anyways!!
:
: good heads up on the cleaning gear..i have no idea how to clean the sensor,
: and it certainly needs a good clean now.
:
: I have approx 10 weeks to quit being a noob and really learn to push my gear
: to it's limits...if only I could afford a spare 400d body to take along for
: the ride :-)
Buy a used body and sell it on E-Bay when you get back. You may come close to
breaking even. A bonus is that you can then leave the Sony at home. If you
have to have a really unobtrusive camera, use your cell phone. The phone won't
work over there, but the embedded camera will.
: I've done a lot of reading about the anthropology and wildlife of
: africa...certianly reccomend ' the white masai' by corrinne hoffmann and '
: dangerous beauty' by marck ross...an account of a safari guides times in sub
: saharan africa...it really is a safari in soft back and well worth reading
: even if africa isnt on your travel radar.
