Re: Battery solutions needed

My Mini MagLite has been replaced by one branded by Smith and

that is the main clue that your batteries are getting weaker/discharged
(the color of the light output) is missing -- the light is always the
same color -- and it is difficult to judge brightness over time. :-)

My bright little LED light only has one high power LED. I've
found that the ones that use multiple LEDs tend to have bluer light,
and unless you pay more for selected LEDs, the color isn't very
consistent. I probably can't make a blanket statement, but the high
power single LED lights I've seen all have a nicer, warmer color.

MagLite has high power LED versions for their AA, C and D cell
lights, as well as replacement LED modules to upgrade older
MagLites. They work very well, are very bright, and even focus.
I'm not sure, but I think that they incorporate a voltage regulator,
based in part on the somewhat weasely wording on the box's
description, but also because the light was very bright even using
some quite dissipated D cells.

I wonder if anyone has ever tested using a fifth alkaline along
with four NiMH AA cells in the SB-800? The higher voltage
(contributed by the 5th cell, not by the alkaline/NiMH difference)
might seem to help shorten the recycle time, but it may actually
increase the recycle time due to its greater internal resistance.

I know that I have not tried that. Nor do I plan to. :-)

Nor would I. I almost added the same to my reply because I highly
doubt that a fifth alkaline would be beneficial. But I just thought
of another similar test that *might* be more useful. If the four
NiMH cells are at least half depleted and are already producing
noticeably longer recycle times, I wonder if in such a case adding
an alkaline AA cell would speed up the recycle times. I might try
that test some day but not any time soon. :)
