As for Windows, I have found
that most of the people complaining about it are generally clueless. There's
not another rock solid and secure OS on the market that can compete with
Windows and support as much backwards compatible hardware.

I find it amazing that you can call Windows "rock solid and
secure". :-) What is the target of 99.9% of the viruses out there? Is
that a sign of "secure"? The virus writers ask for two criteria in
their targets:

1) Easy to break security to infect the machine.

2) Large numbers of the machines out there, to maximize
the spread.

As for supporting backwards compatible hardware, I find that
both Sun's Solaris and OpenBSD do an excellent job of supporting legacy
hardware. (As do many of the other flavors of BSD unix, and most flavors
of linux.) And -- unlike Windows, which insists on a new driver version
for each card made by any manufacturer based on a given chipset, the
various unix/linux implementations tend to accept all cards with the
same chipset with a single driver. And at least in OpenBSD, all the
drivers are compiled into the kernel, so there is none of this "Have to
load a driver for your new hardware" -- even if you just happened to
plug a known USB device into a different USB socket. :-)

Ever tried to run today's Windows on a ten-year-old machine?
How long are you willing to wait for it to complete booting?

Enjoy,
DoN.
